To kick things off, here is the current issue’s Letter from the Editor by John Zaktansky:

One phone call.

Two words.

Five years of sleepless nights fueled by guilt-riddled regrets and what-ifs.

What would it have taken to reverse that life-altering phone call five Octobers ago? To avoid hearing the phrase “Matt’s dead” in a somber, no-nonsense tone of voice from his shell-shocked sister? To still have my friend here to enjoy another season of Penn State football and fall family gatherings such as my daughter’s birthday party that was once a can’t-miss event for him?

Suicide is real. It is messy. It is painful — not only for those struggling with the silent, lonely stigma of major depression that can so quickly spiral out of control — but also for the family and friends left behind.

Just ask Christina Oberheim, who lost her husband to self-inflicted gunshot wound. Or David Lilley, Emily Bogovich and Sarah Sees — each of whom struggled with the dark demons of depression and came ever so close to losing everything in the process. Hear their stories, lessons learned and how you potentially can save the life of a loved one who may be spiraling out of control.

One of the things my friend Matt and I loved about the fall was football — especially, in Matt’s case, Penn State. Has any program overcome such adversity in such an incredible fashion?

We look into the miraculous turnaround for the Nittany Lions and how coach James Franklin created a new culture of success from within.

We also catch up with central Pennsylvania native Brett Veach on his recent ascension to the role of general manager of a revitalized Kansas City Chiefs program — and touch base with Lauren Imhoof, who has turned some lessons learned locally into a budding career nationally in the modeling scene.

All of this and so much more can be found Inside Pennsylvania.
