The Horning Barn
Written by Jerry Westbrook

Like the Horning family, the Horning barn demonstrates strength of character. And the Hornings have worked endlessly to preserve and build on this character. The proverbial contented cows and gentle horses were like members of this extended family. Most of the 14 children are grown, but the two young men are still active in the family enterprise. |
Mrs. Horning, besides doing her share as a farm wife, raises several breeds of puppies.
At first, it looks like a case of "you can't get there from here,"but if you wander around the countryside for a while as we did, "here" becomes someplace else, then someplace else again, and suddenly you're "there."
When you arrive, it's easy to see that three generations of Hornings have left their mark on this stately red and white barn on Mensch Road, Mifflinburg.
First Grandfather Horning, and now Phares Horning, his wife, and 14 children (all grown) have groomed the place to suit their needs.
A new, classic style natural finish stable door is a stand-out. A recently built sky-high silo stretches into the blue beside the original concrete model. Various additions jut out here and there, meeting the expanding needs of the family enterprise.
